According to an article published in American Psychologist magazine, the majority of graduate and doctoral programs in psychology require that the student complete courses in statistics, research designs and experimental methods, abnormal psychology, psychology of personality and child development psychology at the undergraduate level. Bachelor degree students can also expect to complete several hours of field work in psychological counseling before officially graduating.

Licensing Requirements for Counseling Psychologists in Florida

The Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling manages the licensing and credentialing program for prospective counseling psychologists. Licensed Mental Health Counselors must meet the following requirements:

  • Payment of a $100 application fee and $105 initial licensing fee
  • Earned a graduate degree or higher from an institution accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP)
  • A minimum of 60 semester credits must be earned at a school accredited by CACREP
  • Completed a course in human sexuality and substance abuse
  • Two years of supervised experience in a mental health setting that consists of a minimum of 1,500 hours of face-to-face psychotherapy and 100 hours of direct supervision
  • Obtain a passing score on the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination

Career Outlook for Counseling and Psychologists in Florida

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that Counseling Psychologists earn a median annual income of $69,000 in Florida (2014). The report lists thousands of Florida residents as being employed as counseling psychologists in the state. The American Psychological Association predicts that the top psychology careers over the next 10 years will be neuropsychology, human resources psychology and psychologists serving Americans over the age of 85.
