West Virginia residents interested in becoming psychologists, school counselors, or therapists, must attain a master's in psychology degree to be eligible for most state job openings. To be licensed by the West Virginia Board of Examiners of Psychologists, individuals must have a master's of psychology degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Although that institution of higher education does not have to be in West Virginia, it must be a brick-and-mortar school. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, West Virginia employed just over 600 clinical, counseling, and school psychologists in May 2010. These psychologists made an annual mean wage of just over $48,000.
At Marshall University, students can earn a master's in psychology degree in either general or clinical psychology. Students take most of their classes at the university's South Charleston campus and can participate in hands-on and clinical training as part of the program. Some financial aid is available for this program. At Mountain State University, students can earn the master's in psychology degree by completing a two-year program that prepares them to teach psychology at a community college, work in corporate or health industries, or enter a doctoral program. The program is designed to offer students research opportunities. Finally, students at West Virginia University can earn a professional master's in psychology degree in about two years. The degree is specifically designed to prepare students to help individuals in West Virginia and Appalachia.
