If you know that you’re passionate about psychology and you’re looking for a specialty that suits you, consider Florida counseling psychology degrees. In counseling psychology, the goal is to use psychological theories and research to effectively diagnose, treat, and manage mental health issues.

Start by contacting counseling psychology degree programs in Florida.

Counseling Psychology Programs in Florida

Even though the field of counseling psychology is well-defined and limited to specific areas of study, there are still many areas of specialization that further define this topic. Choosing a school that is in line with your career goals and your research or practice goals is a big factor in your overall success.

Most programs are designed to be completed in person, but for the busy student, there are some counseling psychology online programs that can save you time and offer more flexibility to your schedule.

At the Master’s and doctoral levels, clinical rotations are required. If you are allowed to complete your theory courses online, you do still need to find time to complete your practicum courses in person.

Entry Level Counseling Psychology Degrees in Florida

At the broadest level of study, you can earn a Bachelor’s degree in counseling psychology or general psychology in Florida. This is a requirement for every other type of counseling psychology degree, so it’s a great place to start if you haven’t earned an undergraduate degree yet or if you would like to get a basic introduction to psychology.

From start to finish, a Bachelor’s degree takes about eight semesters. In addition to studying counseling, you may take coursework in areas like educational psychology, abnormal psychology, and experimental psychology.

Being well-versed in these subjects may make you a more appealing applicant for graduate and doctoral programs, in addition to deepening your knowledge of the social sciences.

Psychology Counseling Courses for Undergraduate Students

  • Psychology and Counseling: This course builds on the training offered in general psychology coursework, tying psychological theories to the goals and outcomes of counseling.
  • Organizational Psychology: Focusing on psychology in business and corporate settings, this course examines how the modern workplace has shaped human psychology and what steps counselors can take to offset workplace stress.
  • Psychology of Childhood: A massive amount of change happens in childhood, which is why so much research focuses on the thinking patterns and behavior of kids. In this class, examine how kids learn and grow at each stage of life.
  • Social Psychology: It’s important to understand how family ties, friendships, and business relationships may affect clients, given that humans are naturally social creatures. Find out how social connections impact a person’s behavior, thoughts, and words.
  • Tests and Measurements: Behavior and thoughts must be measurable and observable to be part of a diagnosis. Upon completion of this class, you should know which tests are used in counseling settings.
  • Abnormal Psychology: Looking at mental health diagnoses, this course should help you get a feel for the diagnostic process and which treatment options are used for different diagnoses.
  • Theories in Counseling and Psychotherapy: By studying basic psychotherapy theories, you can start to understand how the field of counseling has developed in modern years and where this field may go in the future.
  • Group Dynamics: To become a counselor, you must be able to conduct group counseling sessions. This introductory class examines how clients act in groups and how their behavior differs from behavior in a one-on-one session.

Florida Counseling Psychology Graduate Programs

To become a licensed counselor, you need at least a graduate degree. For that reason, Master’s in counseling psychology programs are extremely popular across the country. Getting accepted to a program can be quite a task. If you worked hard during your undergraduate years and earned high grades, you may be well on your way.

You must also take the GRE, get recommendations from undergraduate professors, and think about what your long-term goals are in the field of counseling psychology. Florida, like many states, requires 60 credits of graduate work for licensure, so accredited Florida counseling psychology graduate programs include no fewer than 60 credits in their curricula. As a full-time student, you may be able to finish your Master’s in counseling psychology in two to three years if you do not take summers off.

Coursework for Graduate Psychology Degrees

  • Counseling Theories and Techniques: Combining theory and practice, this class sets the tone for the rest of your graduate degree. As you learn about the theories that shape counseling psychology, you discover how to put these theories to work by observing work with clients.
  • Psychosocial and Multicultural Aspects of Counseling: Human development doesn’t happen in a vacuum; social and cultural influences play a huge part in who you are. Throughout this class, you learn about the factors that may influence your clients’ actions and decision making processes.
  • Foundations of Mental Health Counseling: This foundational class is key to your development as a counselor and your ability to meet your clients’ needs.
  • Assessment in Counseling and Rehabilitation: Regular assessment is an important part of the counseling process. Learn how to perform an initial assessment on a client and then periodically assess them for progress.
  • Group Counseling: Explore the goals of group counseling sessions and the steps you can take to make group sessions productive.

PhD in Counseling Psychology Programs in Florida

Attending a PhD counseling psychology program may put you on the path to becoming a licensed psychologist, which offers a broader scope of practice than licensure as a mental health counselor.

At this level of counseling psychologist education, you need to earn roughly 100 credits over a period of four to six years. The clinical requirements are substantially greater than they are for counseling psychology graduate programs, and students must also write and defend a dissertation prior to graduation.

Counseling Psychology PhD Program Courses

  • Theory, Research, and Practice: This intensive course looks at the many areas of psychology you may work in as a licensed psychologist. Learn how to understand theory, conduct research, and apply your knowledge to clinical practice.
  • Psychological Appraisal: Students in this class learn how clients perceive situations and appraise them, which in turn leads to the feelings they have about situations and people.
  • Vocational Psychology and Career Development: Many clients may see you because of midlife career changes or a lack of guidance in their work. The theories in this course can help you make positive changes in their lives.
  • Cultural Diversity and Mental Health: You may not share the same cultural background as all of your clients. Being able to provide evidence-based care makes the most of each counseling session you provide.
  • Supervision in Counseling Psychology: The field of psychology requires accountability and supervision. Consider the role of supervision in counseling and what your responsibilities are when you are being supervised or providing supervision.

This is the time to make a choice that can change your life and make a positive impact on the people around you.

Licensed Counseling Psychologists in Florida

After completing your psychology counseling courses, you can start working toward licensure. With a graduate degree or doctoral degree, you may choose to become a Licensed Mental Health Counselor.

This certification requires 60 graduate credits, 1500 hours of postgraduate experience in no fewer than 100 weeks, and a passing score on the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination. At the time of application, you must pay a $100 application fee and a $105 initial licensure fee. All paperwork goes through the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling. By the end of March in every odd-numbered year, you must pay a $130 renewal fee and complete 25 hours of continuing education.

To become a counseling psychologist, you must go through the Florida Board of Psychology. They require passing scores on the Examination for Professional Practice of Psychology and the Florida Laws and Rules Examination. In total, you need 4,000 hours of experience. You may earn 2,000 hours as a doctoral student, but the remaining 2,000 hours must be completed after your doctoral degree. The Board charges a $100 licensure fee and a $200 application fee. By the end of May in every even-numbered year, you have to pay a $300 renewal fee and provide proof of 40 continuing education credits.

Where Do Counseling Psychologists Work?

When you start working as a counseling psychologist or counselor, you may put your training to use in a wide variety of settings. Some graduates focus on educational psychology, which puts them in a great place to seek employment in schools and colleges. Others prefer to work in clinical settings, such as inpatient mental health centers, hospitals, and privately owned clinics.

Some psychologists have a long-term goal of self-employment. This path requires funding, a reputation in your community, a solid patient base, and the ability to effectively run a business. In addition to meeting psychologist licensing requirements, those who own their own clinic must also meet the standards of business licensure and healthcare facility licensure in Florida.

Gaining experience at a clinic or hospital while working toward this goal may provide valuable experience and provide the networking opportunities you need to make self-employment a practical option.

Counseling Psychology Salary and 2017 Job Outlook for Counselors in Florida

Since Florida is a very large state, income averages and job outlook figures vary quite a bit from region to region. If you live in an urban area, you may be able to earn a significantly higher salary due to the higher cost of living in large cities. Rural parts of Florida are more likely to have a mental healthcare provider shortage. Working in a shortage area may allow you to get student loan assistance, sign-on bonuses, or other benefits.

In Florida, the average income for a mental health counselor is $42,980 per year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2017). Demand for counselors is extremely high in this state; from 2014 through 2024, O*Net anticipates a 27% boost in job openings for mental health counselors (2017).

Salaries are much higher for psychologists, due to the increased education and training needed to work as a psychologist in Florida. On average, Florida counseling psychologists earn $71,810 per year (BLS, 2017). By the year 2024, you may see job openings for psychologists increase 29% throughout the state (O*Net, 2017). Your income may be determined by which setting you work in. Private clinics may have greater income potential, but nonprofit settings may offer more competitive benefits packages.

Florida Counseling Organizations

If you’re interested in counseling psychology online programs because you want to make a difference, this is truly a field where you could thrive.
