Many universities in New York State offer educational psychology degree programs. Prospective students may choose from master's programs, educational specializations, or doctoral degrees. The master's option is the first level of graduate training and can be completed in four semesters, typically two years, of studies. A specialization program adds to the master's level training and can be obtained in an additional year of classes. The doctoral degree is the highest level of education available in the field of educational psychology and generally takes an additional four years of coursework to complete.

When students choose a doctoral degree program at the onset of their academic careers, the master's degree and specializations are included into the doctoral program. Students may choose a traditional university or take classes online through an accredited distance learning institution.

New York State Psychologists Licensing Standards

Established by the Office of the Professions, psychologists in the state of New York are required to be licensed in order to lawfully provide psychological services to the public. Psychologists are required to be of good moral character, be 21 years of age or older, and meet standard education and experience requirements.

The Office of the Professions requires that applicants for licensure possess a doctoral degree in psychology and have completed 1750 hours of supervised service in the field. The applicant is then allowed to take an examination that he or she must pass in order to be granted a license to practice psychology in New York State.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, New York State is the third highest paying state in the U.S. for the psychology profession. On average, psychologists in New York State earn $84,850 per year.
