The Tennessee Board for Professional Counselors, Marriage & Family Therapists and Clinical Pastoral Therapists oversees the credentialing program for current and future counselors. The requirements for Licensed Professional Counselor/Mental Health Service Provider (LPC/MHSP) include:

  • Nine graduate semester hours of courses related to the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of mental disorders
  • The above requirements can be in addition to or as part of a graduate degree program
  • 3,000 hours of post-master supervised professional experience over a two-year period
  • 50 hours of direct supervision per year
  • Passing score on the National Counseling Exam (NCE), Tennessee Jurisprudence Exam and National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE)

The designation of Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Tennessee requires the following:

  • 60 graduate hours in professional counseling from a college accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
  • Graduate degree in professional counseling
  • 500 hour practicum of which 300 hours must be in a professional setting
  • 3,000 hours of direct clinical experience
