Licensing Requirements for Counseling Psychologists in New Jersey

Licensing of new and existing counselors is regulated by the New Jersey Board of Marriage & Family Counselors Professional Counselor Examination Committee. Applicants must meet the following criteria to receive the credential of Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC):

  • Graduate degree from a regionally or nationally accredited college or university
  • 60 graduate semester hours in courses focusing on counseling
  • 45 of the 60 hours must be in eight of the nine defined course content areas
  • 4,500 hours over three years of full-time supervised counseling experience in a clinical setting
  • One year of counseling hours may be completed prior to receiving master degree
  • 30 graduate semester hours beyond the graduate degree may be substituted for one year or 1,500 hours of direct counseling experience
  • All applicants must have a minimum of one year of post-master supervised experience
  • Application fee is $75 and initial licensing fee is $250 during first year of biennial renewal period or $125 during second year
