One of the most important decisions that a psychology major must make is which college or university to attend. Whether it is on campus, online, or a hybrid program, it is important to ensure that the school is accredited by the American Psychological Association or a related accrediting board. Along with a Master’s degree or PhD, graduation from an accredited college is a firm requirement for counseling psychology careers in Maryland.

In a typical graduate degree program at a Maryland college, students will complete the following coursework:

  • Biological, cognitive and social psychology
  • History and systems of psychology
  • Theories of counseling
  • Assessment and research methods
  • Multicultural psychology
  • Industrial psychology

It normally takes three to four years to complete formal coursework and earn an undergraduate degree. For their graduate degrees, students often complete their dissertation during their fifth year and their internship during their final year.
