Counseling Psychologist Education Programs in Illinois

Once considered a luxury for those with lots of time and money, mental healthcare is now considered a necessity in the United States. Untreated mental illness, poor coping techniques, and stressful life experiences can leave people without guidance and without any knowledge of how to fulfill their potential.

By becoming a mental health counselor or counseling psychologist, you may be able to provide effective, evidence-based treatment to patients of all ages, diagnoses, socioeconomic backgrounds, and expectations of healthcare providers.

If you’re excited about the possibility of a career in counseling, contact counseling psychology schools in Illinois to learn more.

Counseling Psychology Programs in Illinois

There are several ways to advance your career in this field of study and become well-versed in counseling theories, techniques, and outcomes. In most counseling psychology programs, you are required to complete an internship or practicum course, if not multiple courses. However, there are quite a few counseling psychology online programs that limit your in-person class attendance by permitting you to complete your theory classes via distance learning.

By considering your career goals, your current level of education, and your experience in the social sciences, you may be able to find a counseling psychologist education program that is tailored to your needs.

Entry Level Counseling Psychology Degrees in Illinois

New to the social sciences or to postsecondary education in general? A Bachelor’s degree is your first stop. Although you cannot use a Bachelor’s degree to become licensed as a counselor or counseling psychologist, you can build the foundation of knowledge you need to pursue graduate-level studies and become licensed.

An undergraduate counseling psychology degree includes at least 120 credits; roughly half come from general education classes and half come from psychology courses. Your coursework isn’t limited to counseling classes at this level, since you must have a general understanding of psychology before you can specialize your knowledge in one area.

Undergraduate Psychology Counseling Courses

  • Abnormal Psychology: This course is essential for a basic understanding of psychology, but it is crucial for those hoping to go into counseling. It provides an overview of mental illnesses, diagnoses, treatments, and symptoms.
  • Behavioral Neuroscience: A knowledge of how the brain functions can make it easier to understand behavior, thought patterns, and other habits.
  • Psychological Statistics: In this course, learn how to analyze statistics and determine whether or not research is accurate and statistically meaningful.
  • Race and Ethnicity: These factors do a lot to influence behavior and belief systems, so it’s important for any counseling psychologist to understand them. By the time you finish this class, you should know how race and ethnicity may impact your treatment plan and goals.
  • Theories of Psychotherapy: Start studying counseling psychology with this course, which exposes students to important counseling theories and beliefs.

Illinois Counseling Psychology Graduate Programs

Graduate psychology degrees are widely available at Illinois schools, since they are mandatory for mental health counselor licensure. As you earn the 48 credits required for a Master’s in counseling psychology, you may become a competent practitioner and develop your knowledge of psychological research.

These programs are often very competitive, so it’s important to have great references, excellent grades, and well-defined goals for your career in counseling psychology.

  • Family Therapy: Working with families and couples can help these social groups function more smoothly and communicate more effectively. Learn the tenets of family therapy in this class.
  • Advanced Psychopathology and Mental Health Diagnosis: Understanding the diagnostic procedures of mental illnesses and how different illnesses present can make you a better clinician.

PhD in Counseling Psychology Programs in Illinois

PhD counseling psychology programs lead to the top level of licensure in psychology. With a doctorate degree, you can apply for licensure as a counseling psychologist and expand your scope of practice. These programs have a lot in common with most Master’s in counseling psychology programs, and in fact, many of these courses overlap. However, a PhD involves more clinical and research work.

By the time you graduate, you should have logged at least 2,000 hours with clients. You are also required to write and defend a dissertation, which then becomes your first piece of research. If you start this counseling psychology degree right after your Bachelor’s degree, you may graduate in four to five years. Students who earn their graduate psychology degrees first may graduate in as little as three years.

PhD in Counseling Psychology IL Class Options

  • Assessment in Counseling: Assessing patients accurately and objectively is the key to a successful treatment plan that addresses their greatest needs. Find out how counselors and psychologists conduct initial assessments and ongoing assessments.
  • Multicultural Counseling: The techniques taught in this class should help you counsel people of all backgrounds and cultures, expanding your client base and helping you make more of a difference in your community.
  • Community-Based Prevention, Advocacy, and Outreach: By working with community-based programs and resources, you can help ensure that patients get the help they need. This class shows you how to network with community groups to reach common goals.
  • Research Methods in Counseling: Conduct, analyze, and assess research with the foundational skills you learn in this class.
  • Ethical and Professional Issues in Counseling Psychology: It’s especially important to work ethically and professionally when your patient base is at risk for forming inappropriate attachments and relationships. This class may help you establish proper boundaries before you even start your career.

Licensed Counseling Psychologists in Illinois

You should be well-versed in licensing requirements by the time you complete your degree. Those who attend counseling psychology graduate programs may be able to become Licensed Professional Counselors through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. You must provide proof of 48 graduate credits and pay a $150 exam fee. You can meet the exam requirement by passing the National Counselor Examination.

From there, you start working on your two years of supervised experience. After completing your postgraduate experience, you can take the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination and apply to become a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. You must renew by March 31 in every odd-numbered year. Each two-year renewal cycle requires 30 continuing education credits.

Psychologists must meet the licensing requirements set forth by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. You are expected to provide proof of a one-year internship and one year of postdoctoral supervised work experience. The application fee is $50 for psychologists.

After passing the Examination for Professional Practice of Psychology, you may begin working as a licensed psychologist. During each two-year renewal period, you must earn at least 24 continuing education credits.

Where Do Counseling Psychologists Work?

After completing your counseling psychology degree, you can start applying for jobs in many settings. If you do not yet have licensure, remember that you must choose a place of employment that allows you to complete supervised work hours.

If you want to work in a school or college, you may need to complete substantial training and coursework in the field of educational psychology. On top of that, you should have supervised internship experience at your chosen workplace. This indicates your long-term interest in helping your chosen population, which reflects your dedication to counseling psychology.

In addition to healthcare facilities, you may look for job openings in educational institutions, research facilities, government agencies, and other places of employment. If you have a professional network of counselors and psychologists, this may be the time to work your contacts and find out which places are hiring. The earlier you begin applying for jobs, the more freedom you may have in choosing your first counseling job.

Counseling Psychology Salary and Job Outlook for Counselors in Illinois

Counseling is a field in which salaries differ greatly. If you work for a government agency or department, your salary may be determined by strict guidelines that are based on your level of education, your seniority, and how much experience you have.

If you work for a private clinic or hospital, you may have a bit more flexibility in terms of starting pay and annual increases. However, more goes into compensation than salary; compare benefits package, student loan forgiveness options, and bonuses to choose a position that suits you.

In Illinois, mental health counselors claim an average income of $44,120 per year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2017). This is very close to national averages and those of other Midwestern states. From 2014 through 2024, demand for mental health counselors may increase 12% in Illinois (O*Net, 2017).

Salaries are slightly higher for counseling, clinical, and school psychologists. They report an average salary of $68,010 per year (BLS, 2017). By the year 2024, O*Net expects job openings for psychologists to increase 9% (2017). As a psychologist, you may also have the chance to open your own clinic. This can significantly boost your earning potential if you have the reputation and patient base needed to boost your earnings.

As noted earlier, networking is a key part of building your career. Even when you become more experienced and confident in your work as a counselor, it’s essential to keep growing and refining your skills.
