A clinical psychology degree is a major step in the licensing process for clinical psychologists in Mississippi. Two of the state’s universities offer doctoral degrees, and one offers a master’s degree program in the area. Additionally, a clinical psychology degree may be achieved online.
Mississippi State University offers a master’s program that includes the coursework and thesis components of a clinical psychology degree. The two doctoral programs in Mississippi also provide the requirements for completion of a master’s degree; however, they consider the Master’s degree a step in a larger process.
Prospective students for the clinical psychology doctoral programs at the University of Mississippi or The University of Southern Mississippi should expect a rigorous five-year program at either of the two universities.
The programs at each school are fairly similar:

- Years 3 and 4: clinical psychology practicum and research
- Year 5: Internship at clinical psychological facility approved by the APA
License Requirements
Achieving a doctorate in clinical psychology from one of Mississippi’s universities may be difficult, but it is one step in the larger process of receiving licensure.
However, 89 percent of those students who receive a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Mississippi and 85 percent of students from Southern Mississippi succeed in obtaining a license from the state board of psychology in Mississippi.
In fact, most who do not receive licenses have not applied due to employment that does not require a license.
In order to apply for a license, those who complete a program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) must complete an application, provide references and a transcript, and provide documentation of two years of supervised experience.
Additionally, a written and oral evaluation by the board are required. The written exam, the Examination for Professional Practice of Psychology (EPPP), requires a score of 500 to pass.
Three professionals, one of whom must be a member of the board, administer the oral examination. When these requirements are complete and approved, licensure is granted by the state of Mississippi.
