License Requirements

The North Carolina Psychology Practice Act governs all of the practice of psychology in the state of North Carolina. Under this act, candidates for licensure must possess a doctoral degree from a school accredited by the American Psychology Association.

Applicants are also required to submit a supervisor form outlining the number of hours in practicum for both internship during schooling and post-doctorate.

Three references must be provided. One reference must come from a doctoral level psychologist, and the other two references can be from other professions. All references must have direct knowledge of the candidate’s skills and competencies within the past year.

Applicants for licensure must also pass two exams. The Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) and a state exam must be passed.

The state exam is a board-developed exam and accesses knowledge of the North Carolina Practice Act, APA Ethics Code and other legal issues. Both of these examinations are computerized and offered multiple times throughout the year at designated locations.
