License Requirements

To become a fully licensed psychologist in Michigan, you must satisfy the requirements mandated by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Board of Psychology.

Michigan requires proof of graduate study in psychology and 2,000 hours of practical supervised psychology experience. Additionally, license applicants are required to submit an application fee and fingerprints for a background check.

Before a license is awarded, the applicant must take and pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. Students in psychology programs may apply for a master's or doctoral educational limited license to complete their required clinical experiences.

Psychologists licensed in other states may be able to obtain a Michigan psychologist license by endorsement.

In 2010, about 34 percent of psychologists were self-employed in private practice or clinics. About 29 percent of psychologists work in educational services, and 20 percent of psychologists work in healthcare settings.

The top-paying industry for psychologists is business schools and computer and management training. Psychologists working in this industry average $48.22 per hour, or $100,310 annually.
