License Requirements

In order to attain licensure to operate as a psychologist in the state of California, educational, professional experience and examination requirements must be successfully completed.

According to Section 2914 of the Business and Professions Code, applicants for licensure must have a doctorate degree with a psychology specialization from an accredited educational institution.

To be in compliance with the California Code of Regulations, applicants must have two years of supervised professional experience.

The total hours required is 3,000. Half of these supervised professional hours must take place post-doctorate.

The California Psychology Licensing Law requires all applicants to pass both the:

  • California Psychology Supplemental Examination (CPSE) and
  • The national Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP)

Both of these examinations are computerized and available year-round at testing sites throughout the state of California.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicates that the annual mean wage for behavioral psychologists in California is $80,000. In addition, the BLS projects that the demand and job growth for these specialists will increase by 22 percent throughout 2020.
