License Requirements

There are a list of requirements mandated by the North Carolina Psychology Board in order to attain licensure to practice as a psychologist.

  • Applicants for licensure must submit an accurate and up-to-date supervision contract form to ensure the required amount of internship hours have been met.
  • Three professional references are required, and one must be from a doctoral level psychologist.
  • Applicants must also pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) and the state exam.
  • The EPPP is a computerized exam with multiple testing locations throughout the state.
    • The state exam is a board-developed exam that tests the applicant's knowledge of the North Carolina Practice Act.
    • It is a 50-multiple question exam and is also computer administered.


Career Outlook for Graduates in North Carolina

The job outlook for psychologists is positive and expected to grow 22 percent through 2020 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). There will be a demand for psychological services in social service agencies, schools, mental health centers and schools.
