Licensing Requirements in Massachusetts

Before you can enter the field as a psychologist or another type of abnormal psychology professional, you will need to pursue your license. The license requirements vary by state, and it is important to work towards satisfying these requirements while you are in school. The license you will be applying for is referred to as the Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) Licensure in the state of Massachusetts.

There are educational, professional experience, supervision, endorsement and examination requirements mandated for licensure as a practicing psychologist in Massachusetts.

For example, the doctoral program that you attended must be accredited by the American Psychological Association at the time the degree was granted. To meet the professional experience requirements, students must have completed at least 1,600 hours of practicum with the supervision and collaboration of a licensed psychologist

You must fulfill both educational requirements and work experience requirements before you can apply to take the National Clinical Mental Health Examination (NCMHE).

The requirements in MA are as follows:

  • A minimum of 60 semester hours in a graduate program, or
  • A minimum of 48 semester hours in an advanced certificate program, or
  • A second Master's or Doctoral Degree in Counseling Psychology
  • 100 hours of a practicum
  • Minimum 600 hours of interning
  • Completion of 10 specific graduate level courses
  • Post-master's work experience of a minimum of 3360 supervised face-to-face direct clinical work experience

Lastly, candidates for state licensure must also obtain and submit professional and ethical endorsements from three individuals with a recognized standing in the field of psychology. These endorsements can be provided from board certified psychiatrists or psychologists. It is required that all applicants take and pass the national examination in psychology. Keep in mind that the board sometimes requires a passing of the state jurisprudence examination also.
