If you’re seeking a career that will provide a sense of personal accomplishment and purpose, earning a degree in abnormal psychology is an excellent choice. The discipline of abnormal psychology deals with psychopathology and maladaptive behaviors. Often, professionals in this field work with people who have a broad range of disorders, including:

  • Obsessive compulsive
  • Eating
  • Mood
  • Cognitive
  • Developmental
  • Anxiety

These populations have behaviors and thoughts that cause internal distress and interfere with their everyday living skills. It’s very difficult for those with these types of disorders to maintain jobs, take care of their families and interact with society. As a professional, you have the opportunity to use your knowledge and skills to improve the lives of others in need.

Through assessment and the implementation of cognitive and behavioral plans, you play a direct role in helping these populations learn and apply new skills to improve their functionality. You also play a major role for supporting them compassionately as they cope with their illness. As you watch your clients improve, your purpose in life is well-defined.
