Abnormal psychology is a branch of science that studies brain dysfunctions that causes irregular behaviors like schizophrenia and obsessive compulsive disorders. Sometimes, a master’s degree can be enough for landing a basic counseling job or assisting in psychology research. But those who want to work independently in treatment or teaching will need to get a doctoral degree from an accredited school. This requires an addition four to five years of schooling plus training under the direction of a certified psychologist.

Before a psychologist can practice independently and treat patients in Georgia, they need to obtain a license from the Georgia State Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

In order to qualify for a license, one must have doctorate in psychology from an accredited college, complete at least 2,000 hours in a clinical internship, and have 1,500 hours in postdoctoral training.

One must also receive a passing score on the National Licensing Examination and the Georgia Jurisprudence Examination.
