If you've considered studying psychology, chances are a friend or family member has asked what kind of career you can have with that degree. But the psychology department faculty at Clemson University says the right question is "what can't you do with a psychology degree?"

About 60 percent of Clemson's psychology undergrads head directly to the workforce and begin careers in a variety of fields. Surveys of recent psychology graduates indicate that they work as teachers, social caseworkers, mental health workers, marketing researchers, sales representatives, even FBI agents and television personalities.

A number of the career fields in which psychology majors frequently find work - including mental health and substance abuse social workers, social and human service assistants, and vocational counselors - are designated as high demand fields in a labor market analysis by South Carolina Works.

Of course, many psychology majors opt to continue their studies at the graduate or doctoral level. In fact, you must have at least a master's degree to be licensed as a psychologist. But a bachelor's degree in psychology also can be a good springboard to postsecondary studies in law, medicine, and many other fields.

Here are some undergraduate programs to consider:

Clemson University in Clemson has 450 students in its Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in psychology programs. The BA program emphasizes foreign language and humanities courses while the BS program places a priority on math and science studies.

Psychology is a hugely popular major at the University of South Carolina - Columbia. Slightly more than 13 percent of the college's undergraduate majors are enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in psychology program. The university recently added a minor in neuroscience option.

At the College of Charleston in Charleston, psychology undergraduates benefit from the universities close ties to the Medical University of South Carolina, which provides opportunities for internships and research. The university website also says its psychology department is one of the few in the region to maintain animal and human research programs supported by laboratory facilities.
